Tablet computers are computers that have only one way for the user to interact with them. Most computers use a keyboard and a mouse. With a mouse you're able to navigate through your computer. If you want to enter a folder you double click. If you want to listen to music you click on it. The keyboard is used to type information into a computer. When you're looking up something on Google or trying to type up a report for business or class of some type you do so with a keyboard. With the free HP Slate you do all of this browsing and typing in of information through a quality touch screen.
The HP Slate n-Trig pen makes it so you can have a touchscreen that is capable of better things than ever before. Firstly, multi touch is enabled in the free Slate. What this means is you can have more than one finger on the computer and it will recognize both in real time. Many tablets have only single touch systems which are extremely limited in what they can do. Also, the HP Slate free's screen is usable by both a tablet pen and a human finger. This makes it so the Slate has one of the most advanced screens out there.
Tablet computers are great for certain things and not so great at others. For example, since all typing has to be done on a virtual keyboard on the Slate's screen your typing speed will never be quite as fast as typing speed on a real keyboard. Virtual keyboards lack the physical feedback that is so important when it comes to error free typing. Also, they don't have the fastest components in the world. Due to the small form factor of the Slate and other tablets you have to fit in power sipping components. These components are a balance between power and high efficiency. Because you can only fit small batteries in a tablet you have to be very careful on what you put in the system. Because of this tablets aren't the best for multi tasking or other processor intensive things such as video encoding.
If you're just looking for a computer that can browse online, watch video and listen to music tablets are perfect. They are also a great way to present things. For example, you could type up a report or PowerPoint on your computer at home and instead of bringing in a bulky laptop you can just use your Slate. The Slate, while it may not be great for making, is great at presenting. Also, the HP Slate free has a USB 2.0 slot so that if you really have to you can hook up a keyboard and or mouse to the system which, in effect, makes it a normal computer. Or, if you prefer no wires you can buy a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and pair them with the internal Bluetooth 3.0 that is found in the Slate.
The Slate is one of the top contenders in the current tablet market. Considering one is a great idea!
